Segregation of Waste Made Mandatory; MC Chandigarh to Pick Up Only Segregated Waste

Chandigarh, December 22:- In a firm step towards strengthening solid waste management and promoting cleanliness in the City Beautiful, the Municipal Corporation Chandigarh has made segregation of waste mandatory for all households and commercial establishments.



MC Commissioner Sh. Amit Kumar, IAS, today directed the Medical Officer of Health and all employees engaged in door-to-door waste collection system that only segregated waste shall be lifted by the Municipal Corporation. He made it clear that handing over non-segregated waste will attract penalties under the relevant provisions of the Municipal Corporation Act.


The Commissioner informed that penalties ranging from ₹500 to ₹13,500 per violation will be imposed on defaulters found giving mixed waste. To ensure strict compliance, each driver of door-to-door garbage collection vehicles has been instructed to maintain a register noting details of households and establishments not providing segregated waste.


He further stated that random checks will be conducted by officers at all levels, and strict action will also be taken against any employee found violating or ignoring the instructions.

Emphasising the twin approach of awareness and enforcement, Sh. Amit Kumar said that while robust IEC (Information, Education and Communication) activities will be intensified to educate citizens about waste segregation, mandatory challaning will also be enforced to ensure compliance.


The Municipal Corporation has appealed to all residents and commercial entities to cooperate by segregating wet and dry waste at source and contribute towards a cleaner, healthier Chandigarh.
