Chandigarh, August 8, 2026: Senior BJP leader and former Chandigarh BJP President Sanjay Tandon today attended a special Independence Day musical programme organised by the Senior Citizens Singers and Artists Association at the Community Centre, Sector 50, Chandigarh, as the Chief Guest.
Addressing the gathering, Tandon called upon citizens to keep alive the spirit of patriotism and pay tribute to the martyrs and freedom fighters through art, music and cultural expression. He appreciated the initiative of the association in bringing senior citizens and artists together to commemorate Independence Day through music.
“Independence Day is not merely a date on the calendar; it is an occasion to remember and honour the countless freedom fighters and soldiers whose sacrifices gave us the opportunity to live in a free nation. Patriotic songs keep those memories alive and inspire the younger generation to value the freedom and responsibilities that have come to us through immense sacrifice,” Tandon said.
“When senior citizens come together and express their love for the nation through music, they set an inspiring example for society. Their passion and commitment remind us that patriotism transcends age and remains a lifelong sentiment,” he added.
Association President Vimal Trikha said the association felt that Independence Day should also be commemorated through a dedicated musical programme in memory of those who fought to free India from the shackles of colonial rule.
“We wanted to remember the brave men and women who sacrificed their lives for the freedom of our country. What better way to express our gratitude than through patriotic songs? Around 40 singers came together to pay homage to the nation's heroes,” he said.
Chandigarh Mayor Saurabh Joshi attended the programme as the Guest of Honour, while Rajendra Sharma, Councillor from Ward 35, was the Special Guest.
Singer KS Chatwal, who has been singing patriotic songs on every Independence Day for the past 25 years, captivated the audience with his rendition of “Hothon Pe Sachchai Rehti Hai, Jahan Dil Mein Safai Rehti Hai.”
Association President Vimal Trikha performed “Mera Rang De Basanti Chola,” while Dr. Vinod Kapila, Financial Secretary of the Association, sang “Ae Jaate Hue Lamho.”, Rakesh Jethi, Vice President, Senior Citizens Singers and Artists Association, presented “Aa Ab Laut Chalen,” B.B. Malhotra sang “Mere Desh Ki Dharti,” and Praveen Kumar performed “Aao Bachchon Tumhe Dikhayen Jhanki Hindustan Ki.”
Other singers also presented popular patriotic and inspirational songs, including Tarsem Raj, who sang “Ae Mere Pyare Watan,” Pawan Sharma, who performed “Insaf Ki Dagar Pe Bachchon Dikhao Chal Kar,” Anita Trikha, who presented “Phir Bhi Dil Hai Hindustani,” and Neeru Agnihotri, who sang “Tora Man Darpan Kehlaye.”
Ashwani Sharma, General Secretary; Yash Paul Tiwari, Advisor; Vinod Sharma, Advisor; B.B. Malhotra, Advisor; and Ashok Bansal, Convenor, were also present along with other office-bearers of the association.
