Dr Aman Sharma Takes Over as President of Indian Rheumatology Association at Yashobhumi during IRACON 2025
Chandigarh : Dr Aman Sharma, Professor in the Clinical Immunology & Rheumatology division of the Department of Internal Medicine at PGIMER, Chandigarh, was formally installed as President of the Indian Rheumatology Association (IRA) at the valedictory ceremony of the 40th Annual Conference of Indian Rheumatology association (IRACON 2025) held at Yashobhoomi, New Delhi.
The four-day conference, held from October 9 to 12 at the India International Convention & Expo Centre in Dwarka, New Delhi, brought together around 2000 rheumatologists, clinical immunologists, researchers, trainees and allied professionals from across India and abroad.
Dr Aman Sharma has previously held the positions of secretary, treasurer and executive committee member of IRA .
His research and clinical interests are centred on rare rheumatic diseases, systemic vasculitis, relapsing polychondritis, and is credited with sensitisation of that a rare disease like DADA2 also occurs in adults. He is the founder of key national registries such as INVAR (Indian Vasculitis Registry) and IRPR (Indian Relapsing Polychondritis Registry), and has developed disease classification and diagnostic criteria in challenging domains (e.g. Sharma and Pinto criteria of Poncet’s disease). He is the Editor-in Chief of Indian Journal of Rheumatology since January 2023 and was in the prestigious Stanford list of Top 2% researchers in his field in the world.
He has been conferred with various prestigious awards and honours including NIMAMS NIH Grand rounds on systemic vasculitis and relapsing polychondritis (2022), Rabindranath Tagore Oration(2019), CMC Vellore- Eminent Mid Carrier Rheumatologist oration (2018), VR Joshi JAPI Award for Outstanding Referee (2018), R Subramanium endowment oration(2015), Annual IRA oration(2015), Shurvir trust visiting professorship (2014), Zydus oration(2011) and IRA young investigator award (2007)
He was a member of Annual Meeting Planning Committee, American College of Rheumatology (2015-18) & Expert reviewer for ACR EULAR Classification criteria of various vasculitis disorders.
Dr Sharma has over 560 research papers,70 book chapters and has edited 10 books including two editions of Textbook of systemic vasculitis. He played a pivotal role in establishing the DM program in Clinical Immunology & Rheumatology at PGIMER. His work bridges clinical care, registry-based science, and education, earning him recognition both within India and internationally.
