CBC Chandigarh organises workshop on Cyber Awareness and Impact of Social Media

Chandigarh, August 19, 2026: The Central Bureau of Communication (CBC), Regional Office Chandigarh, organised a workshop on “Cyber Awareness and Impact of Social Media” today. Officers and officials of the Press Information Bureau (PIB) and Central Bureau of Communication (CBC), including personnel from the Regional Office and field offices, participated in the workshop.



Addressing the workshop, Sh. Pritam Singh, Director, Regional Office Chandigarh, said that cyber awareness and responsible use of social media have become essential for effective public communication in the digital age. He said that government offices deal with important and sensitive information, making it imperative for every officer and official to remain vigilant against cyber threats, phishing attempts, suspicious links, online fraud and misinformation.


Sh. Pritam Singh emphasised that social media has emerged as a powerful platform for public communication and for reaching citizens with information about government initiatives and programmes. However, he said that its effective use must be accompanied by responsibility and caution. He urged officials to verify the authenticity and source of information before sharing it on digital platforms and stressed the importance of protecting official information, personal data and other sensitive information.


Ms. Sapna, Deputy Director, CBC Chandigarh, in her address, highlighted the growing importance of digital and cyber awareness among government officials and employees. She said that social media can be effectively used to disseminate information about government schemes, policies and public welfare initiatives, but the spread of misinformation and misleading content remains a major challenge. She urged participants to adopt safe digital practices, exercise caution while opening suspicious links and attachments, and remain alert to unusual online activities.


Speaking on the “Impact of Social Media”, Dr. Sumedha Singh, Professor, Panjab University, Chandigarh, discussed the changing nature of social media and its influence on society, communication and public opinion. She said that social media has made the exchange of information and interaction among people faster and more accessible. At the same time, she highlighted challenges such as misinformation, unverified content and excessive use of social media. She advised participants to adopt a balanced, informed and responsible approach towards social media.


Sh. Gurcharan Singh, Faculty Member, Central Detective Training Institute (CDTI), Chandigarh, delivered a session on “Cyber Awareness” and sensitised participants about various cyber threats and preventive measures. He advised participants to exercise caution while dealing with suspicious emails, messages, links and online requests. He emphasised the importance of protecting sensitive digital information, using strong passwords, following safe digital practices and reporting cyber incidents promptly.


The workshop provided participants with practical insights into cybersecurity precautions, safe use of digital platforms and responsible conduct on social media. Participants also discussed various challenges related to cyber security and the impact of social media and shared their experiences.


The workshop aimed to promote safe and effective use of digital platforms in official work and enhance awareness among officers and officials regarding emerging cyber threats and challenges associated with social media.
