PMDA’s timely preparedness and prompt field action ensure effective drainage during heavy rainfall in Panchkula
Chandigarh, August 19: The proactive preparedness and prompt response of the Panchkula Metropolitan Development Authority (PMDA) ensured effective drainage and prevented waterlogging in Panchkula despite heavy rainfall received in the city yesterday.
Under the directions of Sh. K.M. Pandurang, IAS, Chief Executive Officer, PMDA, the engineering and field teams remained on alert and undertook continuous monitoring of vulnerable locations. All areas where water accumulation was reported or anticipated were inspected promptly, and necessary measures were taken to ensure quick drainage of rainwater.
As part of the preparedness measures, the road gullies were thoroughly cleaned and repaired, while new road gullies were constructed at roundabouts and other staggered locations identified as vulnerable to water accumulation. The main storm-water drainage network was also cleaned, strengthened and made more effective to handle heavy rainfall.
The PMDA had undertaken extensive cleaning and desilting of drains two to three times prior to the onset of heavy rains, ensuring that the drainage infrastructure remained functional and capable of handling increased water flow.
During the rainfall, different engineering and field teams were deployed round-the-clock for immediate cleaning of road gullies and removal of any obstruction to the smooth flow of rainwater. The teams remained operational 24x7 to respond promptly to any water accumulation.
Special attention was also given to the Ghaggar River banks, which were strengthened as a precautionary measure to prevent scouring and ensure the safety and stability of the adjoining areas.
CEO, PMDA, Sh. K.M. Pandurang, personally visited various roads and vulnerable locations along with the engineering team to review the drainage arrangements and ensure immediate clearance of accumulated water wherever required. His on-ground supervision enabled the field teams to respond swiftly and effectively.
The coordinated efforts and advance preparedness of the PMDA resulted in no major waterlogging or untoward incident being reported during or after the heavy rainfall in Panchkula.
