Boris Johnson Slams US Move to Ease Russian Oil Sanctions, Says It Could Benefit Putin

London: Former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has criticised the United States over its reported decision to ease sanctions on Russian fuel, arguing that the move could help finance Russia’s war against Ukraine while doing little to reduce fuel prices for American consumers.

In a statement shared on social media, Johnson accused Washington of unfairly blaming Ukraine for rising fuel prices, which he linked to the closure of the Strait of Hormuz.

Johnson said Russian President Vladimir Putin continues to wage war against Ukraine, resulting in the deaths of innocent Ukrainian civilians. He stressed that Ukrainians are fighting to defend their lives and their country’s sovereignty.

Criticising the reported US policy shift, Johnson argued that American drivers should not be made to bear the cost of a decision that could indirectly support Russia’s military campaign.

“It won’t work and I doubt it will make much difference to the price of fuel,” Johnson said, expressing scepticism about the potential impact of easing restrictions on Russian energy supplies.

Johnson also called for an end to the war, insisting that restoring Russian oil and gas to global markets should be linked to a peaceful resolution that guarantees Ukraine remains free, sovereign and independent.

His remarks highlight the continuing debate over energy security, sanctions on Russia and the economic consequences of geopolitical tensions for global oil markets.
