Chandigarh : Organ donation embodies the highest ideals of compassion and selflessness, transforming an individual’s noble decision into renewed hope and a second chance at life for others.
Western Command organised an Organ Donation Awareness Programme at Chandimandir on 20 August 2026, chaired by Lt Gen Pushpendra Singh, AVSM, SM**, GOC-in-C, Western Command. The programme formed part of a series of awareness initiatives undertaken by Western Command in connection with World Organ Donation Day, observed on 13 August, to promote greater understanding of organ donation and encourage informed participation. Conducted under the aegis of Command Hospital, Chandimandir, the programme featured expert talks, motivational videos and meaningful interactions that addressed prevalent myths and misconceptions, highlighted the life-saving impact of organ donation and encouraged participants to pledge their organs.

A poignant highlight of the programme was the felicitation of families who, in moments of profound personal loss, chose to give others the gift of life through organ donation. The Army Commander honoured Mrs Sudeshna Singh, HQ Recruiting Zone (Punjab & J&K), Smt B Amrutha, 15 COSR, Smt Sharmila Mukhiya, 14 GTC, Lt Col Heera Singh, HQ Recruiting Zone (Punjab & J&K) and Nk Thombare Kailas, 19 GUARDS, acknowledging their courage, compassion and exemplary contribution towards saving lives and inspiring others to support the cause. Serving personnel who made noteworthy contributions towards promoting organ donation were also awarded the GOC-in-C Commendation Card in recognition of their service to humanity.
The programme concluded with a call to transform awareness into meaningful action through informed choices, voluntary pledges and greater community participation. The initiative reaffirmed the Indian Army’s enduring ethos of selfless service and its commitment to society beyond the call of duty carrying forward a simple yet powerful message: in giving life forward, one legacy can live on through many.
